"The Terminal" is a 2004 comedy-drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks. The film is inspired by the true story of Merhan Karimi Nasseri, an Iranian refugee who lived in Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris for several years.
In the film, Hanks plays Viktor Navorski, an Eastern European tourist who finds himself stranded at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport when a coup in his home country invalidates his passport. Unable to enter the United States or go back to his own country, Viktor is forced to live in the airport terminal.
The story follows Viktor as he learns to survive in the terminal, making friends with various airport employees and passengers and finding odd jobs to earn money. He also strikes up a connection with a flight attendant named Amelia Warren, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones.
"The Terminal" explores themes of isolation, belonging, bureaucracy, and human connection. It received generally positive reviews from critics, praising Hanks' performance and Spielberg's direction.
The film was partially shot in an actual decommissioned terminal at the Los Angeles International Airport, which was converted into a replica of JFK Airport's Terminal 4. It grossed over $219 million worldwide at the box office.
